Johnny (1980) is a Tamil film directed by Mahendran. Johnny is considered one of the finest movies of Mahendran. It had Rajinikanth and Sridevi in the main roles with Rajinikanth in a dual role. Ilayaraja’s music is a major highlight of the film. The songs are popular even years after its release and is almost a must in college culturals and the light music concerts.
Archana (Sridevi) plays the role of popular singer, and Johnny (Rajinikanth) is her ardent fan. Johnny is a con-man who does petty-thefts (only on the greedy ones) to close the loan taken by his father. Johnny never misses the concerts of Archana and this is noticed by Archana too. A tender love develops between the two, but Jhonny is guarded in accepting the love of Archana due to his not-so-clean background. But one day Johnny accepts the love of Archana when she proposes to him. Meanwhile, the other character of Rajini, a barber lives a lonely life with his assortment of pet animals. He falls for Deepa another loner and they both plan to marry. The barber Rajini notices his lover’s infidelity and kills her in rage. Knowing about his look alike Johnny and knowing that he is wanted by the police, he tries to pass on the murder charge to him. Both of them are chased by police, Jhonny hides in a forest, barber Rajini tries to pass of as Johnny by taking refuge in Archanas house. Archana gets hurt by the curt behavior of barber Rajini (in the guise of Johnny) and she is confused on the same. Finally, the barber Rajini realises his folly and unites the lovers by getting caught in the police, taking responsibility of Johnny’s crimes included.

Dharma Yuddam is a 1979 Tamil film directed by R. C. Sakthi, a close associate of Kamal Hassan.Rajini’s parents are killed by Thengai Srinivasan. He is adopted and brought up by a rich man. After many years Rajini finds out that Thengai Srinivasan has been stealing body parts, especially eyes. How Rajini takes revenge on him forms the crux of the story.
The film became a major hit for Rajinikanth. Ilaiyaraaja’s music was a major highlight of this film, especially the songs “Aagaya Gangai”(rendered by Malaysia Vasudevan and S. Janaki) and “Oru Thanga Rathathil”, rendered by Malaysia Vasudevan. Music Maestro Ilaiyaraaja had given some impeccable Background scores in the form of Western and Indian fusion.

True to it’s title – which means three knots – the story revolves around three characters and the unexpected happenings in their lives. She is left with no option but give her consent to marry Prasad. Will she now accept Prasad’s love or does she seek revenge for her lover’s death? Selvi chooses a novel and interesting path which forms the rest of the story.
